Autumnal Commute

-Steve Shaw

First scent of fall death in the air
Yellow-pale tips of corn stalks
Betray dry gray roots standing tired in the dust.
Trees and shrubs
With flecks of red and brown above the ears.
Fields that sweep a sigh
In the morning wind
Saying: enough, enough.
Let us turn; we are through.
